Right out of the gate, my favorite productivity tool is a To-Do list. So much so that my interns and friends often call me The List Lady. In fact, my BFF is constantly telling me to ditch the lists and live more off the cuff. I love my To-Do list, though, because it helps keep me focused and on track. The trick to an effective to-do list is to update it in the evening versus in the morning. It’s easier to cross off tasks that were completed that day and carry over uncompleted tasks than it is to start off the morning scrambling not to forget something. Here are five more productivity tools that small business owners, authors, speaker, and entrepreneurs can use to keep things running smoothly.

  1. Increase your productivity by making sure your To-Do list is prioritized. Mine is prioritized with dollar signs rather than numbers. At a glance, I can tell a bulleted item with $$$ gets greater priority and more attention than one with $.
  2. Eliminate as many distractions as possible. Turn off social media, silence your cell phone, ignore incoming emails, and stay focused on each item until it’s completed.
  3. Start your day off at a less hectic pace. Occasionally, get up a half hour early and opt for a leisurely bath versus a rushed shower.
  4. Outsource the things that drain your time without increasing your bottom line. If blog writing isn’t your forte, you waste valuable time wrestling with it. It’s a better idea to hand it off to a copywriter and focus on money making activities.
  5. Another favorite productivity trick is to avoid meeting just for meeting’s sake. I’m always up for a productive meeting, but a meeting just because it’s on the schedule usually gets booted off my schedule.

Put one or all of these productivity hacks into play and take control of your schedule, increase your productivity, and watch your business start moving in a more productive direction.
